What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a therapeutic approach that combines the use of ketamine, prescribed and monitored by a qualified medical provider, with psychotherapy to support emotional healing and psychological flexibility. When used thoughtfully and ethically, ketamine can help create conditions that allow clients to engage with therapy in new and meaningful ways

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Process

1. Preparation Sessions

Preparation sessions focus on building safety, trust, and clarity before any ketamine is used. During this phase, we explore your goals, concerns, and intentions, while also discussing your history, coping strategies, and support systems.

2. Ketamine Sessions (in Coordination with Medical Care)

Ketamine is prescribed and administered by a licensed medical provider in a medically appropriate setting. The role of ketamine is not to “fix” or bypass difficulties, but to support psychological flexibility and openness.

During ketamine sessions, some individuals experience:

    •    A sense of emotional spaciousness or perspective shift

    •    Reduced intensity of habitual thought patterns

    •    Increased access to curiosity, compassion, or insight

Experiences vary, and there is no “right” way to feel. My role as a psychotherapist is to provide emotional support, attunement, and grounding as appropriate, while respecting the medical provider’s scope of care.

3. Integration Sessions

Integration sessions are a critical part of KAP. These sessions help you make meaning of your experience and bring insights into everyday life in a sustainable way.

Integration may include:

    •    Reflecting on emotional or symbolic material that emerged

    •    Working with parts that were activated or softened

    •    Strengthening Self-leadership and internal trust

    •    Supporting nervous system regulation and stabilization

A Thoughtful, Individualized Process

KAP is not a one-size-fits-all approach or a quick solution. It is a relational, ethical process that respects your autonomy, pacing, and capacity. Not everyone is a fit for KAP, and part of the process is determining together whether this approach aligns with your needs and circumstances.
